Hotel benchmarks by class and location
Benchmarks from the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index (CHSB), measured with the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) method. They can be narrowed by location and by star rating or hotel type.
- Publisher
- Cornell University and Greenview (CHSB index), using the HCMI method
- Best for
- Stays where the hotel's class or type is known
- Result
- One total for all the room-nights, or for the floor area
- Energy scope
- Hotel operations
- Factor year
- Selectable dataset year; latest stable dataset by default
How it works
- SQUAKE uses the benchmark for the hotel's location and its star rating or hotel type. If both are known, the star rating is used.
- By default it uses the rooms footprint per occupied room. It can use the whole-hotel footprint per occupied room instead.
- A floor area switches the calculation to square metres instead of nights.
- HCMI is the hotel industry's carbon measurement method, from the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. It counts energy used on site, refrigerants and outsourced laundry.
Trip details used
When a detail is missing, SQUAKE uses the default.
| Detail | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Room-nights | Required | One room for one night counts as 1. |
| Country | United Kingdom | |
| State and city | None | |
| Star rating | None | 1 to 5. Takes priority over hotel type. |
| Hotel type | Hotel average | For example airport, convention, resort or extended stay. |
| Footprint | Rooms footprint | Or the whole-hotel footprint. |
| Floor area | None | Replaces room-nights with a calculation per square metre. |
What is included

- Energy used on site
- Refrigerants
- Outsourced laundry
Not included
- Water, waste, food and purchased goods
Limitations
- Benchmarks describe typical hotels in a market, not the booked hotel.
- Each dataset reflects hotel data from earlier years.
