Train methodology
ADEME
French transport GHG information
Factors per passenger-km from France's official method for transport greenhouse gas information, by train type and traction. The electric train factors reflect France's low-carbon electricity.

- Best for
- Rail travel in France
- Result
- One total per trip, for all travellers
- Energy scope
- WTW (energy only)
- Factor year
- Not selectable
How it works
- Factors vary by train type (high-speed, mainline or local/express) and traction. The French method has electric factors for all three types and a diesel factor for local/express trains only.
- The factors count energy only: the fuel or electricity used, plus producing and delivering it.
- If the stations cannot be identified, SQUAKE uses generic factors.
Trip details used
When a detail is missing, SQUAKE uses the default.
| Detail | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Origin and destination | Required without a distance | Stations or addresses. |
| Rail distance | Calculated from the route | Replaces the route-based distance. |
| Train type | Local/express | High-speed, mainline or local/express. |
| Traction | Diesel | Set to electric for electric trains. |
| Number of travellers | 1 |
What is included
Included
- Fuel or electricity used by the train
- Producing and delivering that energy
Not included
- Building and maintaining trains, tracks and stations
Limitations
- Electric train factors reflect French electricity.
- Results depend strongly on the train type and traction provided.
