Train methodology
Green Travel Data
Rail Delivery Group
Station-to-station emissions for National Rail journeys in Great Britain, from the Rail Delivery Group. Each value is a passenger's share of the train's energy emissions, by travel class. The data was formerly called the Green Travel Pledge.

How it works
- SQUAKE looks up the value for the journey between the two stations.
- RDG builds each value from the timetable, train types and carriages, Network Rail electricity data, diesel data and UK Government conversion factors, then shares it over the expected passengers.
- First-class passengers get a larger share, based on the space their seats take up.
- A journey value averages all services between the two stations, including journeys with a change of train.
- If there is no value for the journey, SQUAKE uses RDG's factor per passenger-km with the rail distance.
- Results also include RDG's values for the same trip by diesel car, plug-in hybrid, electric car and plane, where available.
- Green Travel Data will also be part of the Rail Emissions Model, as its Tier 0 (coming soon).
Trip details used
When a detail is missing, SQUAKE uses the default.
| Detail | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Origin and destination stations | Required | Stations in Great Britain. |
| Travel class | Average | First, standard or average. |
| Number of travellers | 1 | |
| Travel date | Latest dataset | Picks the latest dataset published before the trip. |
| Rail distance | None | Only used when there is no value for the journey. |
What is included
Included
- Diesel burned and electricity used by the trains
- Producing and delivering the fuel and electricity
Not included
- Travel to and from stations
- Short-term changes such as engineering works or disruption
Limitations
- Values reflect the planned timetable, not the train on the day.
- Data follow the timetable cycle, so recent changes may not be reflected yet.
